Microwaves for loose skin and cellulite

Excessive adipose skin and cellulite make up some of our clients’ most common complaints.

Aspiration techniques remain the gold standard for excessive adipose skin, however it has proven difficult to come up with an effective treatment for cellulite and loose skin.

Excessive adipose skin is often associated with a form of Edematous Fibrosclerotic Panniculopathy (EFP), more commonly known as cellulite. The characteristic dimpled and lumpy appearance of cellulite cannot be eradicated by surgical liposuction. Liposuction can give you a more contoured figure but it cannot change the texture of your skin; some may say that it makes us look better with our clothes on than without.

Cellulite is a skin disorder which leads to an increase in adipose tissue, as well as lymphatic and venous stasis. It can also trigger a progressive degenerative hypoxic process of the extracellular matrix which, if ignored, can develop into fibrosis of the adipose tissue.

Below, we will evaluate a method that uses microwaves at a frequency of 2.45GHz. Without causing overheating, this method acts directly on the adipose tissue (hypodermis) through the skin’s surface.

Two handpieces work at different depths depending on the client’s needs and the area being treated. The head of the handpiece is cooled and slid over the area of skin to be treated. Each area, which measures 15×5 cm, takes approximately 15 minutes to treat.

We recommend around 4-6 sessions at intervals of around 30 days.

After each session, the probes are disinfected and sterilised with appropriate disinfectants in line with the latest Covid-19 regulations. This method is safe and non-invasive.

Metabolic effect on adipocytes

The targeted action of the microwaves on the adipose tissue produces the following:

remodelling of the connective matrix with subsequent modification of the microenvironment, which regulates adipocyte metabolism. Changes are therefore made to the homeostasis of the adipocytes and the connective interstitial tissue, which denotes the vital condition of the adipose tissue. Metabolic changes occur due to thermal stress in the adipocytes, which are stimulated to release a much higher than usual volume of lipids into the surrounding space.

Action on cellulite

Absorbed by the fibrous connective tissue, the energy of the microwaves causes the collagen to dissolve. This results in debridement of the tightly woven, non-elasticated tissue that clogs the adipose lobules. In addition to smoothing the skin’s surface, the dissolved collagen also enables reactivation of the fibroblasts, stimulating them to produce new collagen with increased elasticity.

Action on loose skin

The heat produced by the microwaves, which reaches the subcutaneous layers, causes an immediate shrinking of the skin’s collagen and induces a consequent tightening effect.

During the treatment, the client may feel mild discomfort, slight tingling and a feeling of tightness. Temporary redness may occur due to the microwaves creating subcutaneous heating. The strength of the microwaves should be appropriate to the client level of tolerance and the area of tissue being treated: the treatment must be effective while not causing excessive discomfort. The Onda Coolwaves system contains an internal database with pre-programmed settings that have three main applications: localized fat, cellulite and tightening. By following the instructions on the graphical user interface, the system’s parameters can easily be set in accordance with the clients’ requirements. For each treatment option, a cooling temperature of 5°C can be set at the skin’s surface.

Recommendations

A lymphatic drainage massage is recommended after treatment with Onda.

An interval of 20 days must elapse before the area can be treated again.

Avoid direct exposure to sunlight for 1-2 days after the treatment.

If the skin is slightly red in the treated areas, avoid immersing it in hot water until the redness has settled.

Drink around 2 litres of water per day to arrive at your session hydrated and facilitate the drainage of interstitial fluids.

Eat a healthy diet and undertake adequate physical activity.

Cellulite is a skin disorder which leads to an increase in adipose tissue, as well as lymphatic and venous stasis. It can also trigger a progressive degenerative hypoxic process of the extracellular matrix which, if ignored, can develop into fibrosis of the adipose tissue and dimpled skin.

We also live in a time of reduced physical activity and a lack of access to fitness centres. This leads to reduced muscle tone and increased muscle wastage.

Read on to discover two innovative technologies that treat cellulite, loose skin, poor muscle tone and excess adipose tissue in a variety of ways.

Metabolic effects

Loss of muscle tone and mass can lead to loss of the body’s shape and definition. Our musculoskeletal system needs continuous movement in order to maintain its tone and increase its mass.

Electromagnetic fields enable the muscles to contract, which increases their mass and energy consumption, enabling the muscle fibres themselves to contract. During normal voluntary muscle contractions, the muscle fibres relax between stimuli because the central nervous system is unable to send another impulse while the previous impulse remains active. Conversely, the magnetic stimulator generates impulses that are independent of brain activity and at such a high frequency that there is no relaxation phase. Magnetic stimulators can generate supramaximal contractions (i.e., greater than those voluntarily achievable by the client) and maintain them for several seconds. This significantly increases the physiological stress and workload required to enable the muscles to adapt. When under supramaximal stress, the muscle tissue is forced to adapt to these extreme conditions by significantly modifying its internal structure, i.e., by growing myofibrils (myofibrillar hypertrophy) and by forming new protein filaments and muscle fibres (muscle hypoplasia). This increase in density and volume leads to greater definition and increased muscle tone.

After each session, the probes are disinfected and sterilised with appropriate disinfectants in line with the latest Covid-19 regulations. This method is safe and non-invasive.

Programmes

Three programmes have been developed for use depending on the condition of the client’s muscles:

Aerobic programme to work muscles with the aim of lipid consumption.

Shaping programme to work muscles with the aim of recovering muscle volume and tone in inactive clients.

Strength programme to work muscles with the aim of increasing muscle volume and strength in clients with defined muscle mass who wish to increase the volume of a specific body part, such as the calves.

Around 6-8 treatment sessions lasting 30 minutes are performed twice a week. Once the desired result has been achieved, treatments will be reduced down to maintenance sessions.

Contraindications and side effects:

This treatment is contraindicated in certain clients: those with pacemakers, cardiac defibrillators, neurostimulator implants, metal implants and infusion pumps, as well as bleeding disorders or recent fractures in the area to be treated. It cannot be used on the head or near the heart. Possible temporary side effects may include localized redness, spasms and muscle tenderness.

Clinical benefits

Abdomen. Reduced adipose tissue thickness, increased rectus abdominis muscle thickness, reduction in diastasis recti, reduction of the waistline. Gluteal region. Improvement in the volume and contour of the treated area, buttock lifting and increased muscle tone.

Conclusion

To conclude, electromagnetic fields create muscle tone through 20,000 contractions administered in under 30 minutes. Programmes can be personalized, enabling you to choose from 3 levels of muscle stimulation (aerobic, remodelling and strength).

Microwaves are used alongside electromagnetic fields to increase the effect on adipose fat, cellulite and loose skin.

Stimulating action with targeted electromagnetic fields not only strengthens and tones our muscles but improves our quality of life due to improved posture. The device is non-invasive and can be used to treat the abdomen, buttocks, arms, legs, inner thighs and calves.

Microwaves in conjunction with electromagnetic fields offer an innovative and cutting-edge solution to the world of non-invasive cosmetic medicine.
